The poem from Miquel Martí i Pol, which deals with Christmas at the turn of the century in a way that is both festive and thoughtful, is of such beauty, present-day relevance, and spiritual and human profundity that it transcends the special circumstances of its writing, making this an ideal work for any Christmas.
The five movements making up the work feature varying degrees of complexity for the singers. The first and last are intended for two choirs of high voices: a children’s choir, and a young women’s choir. The second and third are clearly for children, while the fourth requires more highly trained ladies’ voices. As a result, the cantata can be performed with one or more choral groups, no narrator or solo singers being required.
There is a version of this piece, in the same collection, with more instrumentation.
