This volume explains what theorists have said about vocal ornamentation and technique within the various schools they represented from the 16th through the 20th centuries. It is divided into four parts: the first part talks about the birth of vocal technique in the Renaissance; the second part examines Baroque vocal technique; the third part deals with several aspects of vocal technique during the period 1750-1860; and the last part with the late Romantic period.
This volume also examines the development of different approaches to sound production, teaching methods and stylistic considerations in a number of publications which appeared in Italy, France, Germany and Spain over the period 1750-1860.
This study is based on the work of the singer and musicologist, Giuliana Montanari. We have translated it and added the section dealing with developments on the Iberian Peninsula.
