The Ukulele is a strummed string musical instrument, derived from the Portuguese cavaquinho.
In 1878, sugarcane harvesters from Madeira (Portugal) emigrated to Hawaii, bringing along a small instrument they called braguinha. Once introduced in Hawaii, it became the ukulele.
Its re-entrant tuning – not following an ascending/descending order – provides the ukulele with a pitch similar to the vihuela or the banjo.
The cultural and ethnical diversity in Hawaii and the Polynesia has been a major factor in making the ukulele a suitable instrument, not only for Hawaiian folk music, but for many other genres, such as bluegrass, blues, jazz, pop, classical music, etc.
The ukulele is especially suitable for 6-to-8 year-old guitar learners. It tuning and technique help to a fast and steady progress.
