Due to the composer’s desire to pay tribute to Beethoven, in 2007 he wrote a sort of “differences” on the renowned second movement of Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13, “Pathétique”. The “differences”, as variations were called in sixteenth century Spain, thus became an intention to “metamorphose” the first theme of the well-known Beethovenian motif, while always respecting the harmonic structure of the original and varying contrapuntally with regard to the
three voices of the string trio. In the very intense central passage of the piece, the theme shifts to a sombre minor mode, which is also very typical of Beethoven. Eventually, it cyclically moves the trio towards a recapitulation that once again reveals the original motif.
