Nowadays any musician wishing to approach the vocal and instrumental works of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries must have a command of the rules of continuo playing, this being essential for the players of the harpsichord, organ and plucked-string instruments who provide the accompaniment for the soloists and the harmonic structure of the musical fabric.
The first volume sets out to introduce students to the practice of reading figured-bass parts and to applying this to linking up the chords. There are also graded exercises to provide practice in reading figured bass parts, covering various aspects.
