Giravoltant al maig

The first part of the book Giravoltant al maig contains the Toldrà-Clausells collection of letters and some of Carner’s letters, and the main theme is the development of El giravolt de maig, the one-act comic opera by Toldrà and Carner. As a whole, this collection of letters is a documentary source that expands on the concept of the cultural and musical world of Barcelona between 1922 and 1936. The figures of Eduard Toldrà and JosepCarnerare very well-known, whereas few people truly know who Manuel Clausells was.

The second part contains a long monographic annex, dedicated to the life and evolution of this icon of Catalan lyric theatre, which includes images from the period depicting the Giravoltant, such as postcards from the collection of letters, photographs, copies of old programmes, old newspaper cuttings from the period concerning the birth of the opera, etc. In many cases, these are not of sufficient image quality but we have nevertheless decided to publish them due to their documentary value.

Several indices are also included: a collection of letters, dates of the performances and their casts, performers, illustrations and an onomastic index. More than 300 notes are also included that comprehensively supplementthe information. All of these elements help the reader to conveniently place himself in the relevant context in each case, and enable the information to be cross-referenced efficiently.
