Although one still can hear comments like ‘reading prevents true expression’, I have long known that when I am offered a job, it is partly because they assume I can read music and, therefore, there will be no need for endless repetition until I finally memorize something. With time, I have come to realize that the better the musicians read, the shorter rehearsals are and the easier it is to get music to “sound right.” In short, if I read well, band-mates are happy and music just flows a lot faster.
However, one must take into account that reading correctly should never displace memorization of the music. So here I encourage students - and myself - not to forget this skill, so appreciated in styles like flamenco and other folk music, but equally useful in any other style. Reading and writing are an important base for learning, playing and composing music. The same way conventional reading and writing help us daily to express, remember and organise ideas, can anyone think that being able to read and write may dwindle our memory or weaken our imagination?
