My first contact with the Vilanova i la Geltrú carnival was in 1973, when I was invited to experience a whole set of traditional folk events which, despite the severe political regime of the time, traditionally took place in Vilanova every Carnival. I was utterly impressed by the freedom of action all those mascarots enjoyed at that time, to roam the streets at night, freely, dressed from top to bottom, with no riots, no inconvenience, no disorder, nor any police repression. Time later my contact with Vilanova became assiduous. I directed for fifteen years the new “Orquestra de Cambra del Garraf”.
This commissioned work is a collection of all these events and experiences, made music. Written for tenora (tenor shawm) and strings to claim the Catalan identity of these project and spirit.
