Altres vistes al mar (Further Views of the Sea). Based on poems by Joan Maragall (1860-1911)

Composed by Narcís Bonet between the ages of fifteen and sixteen, these five pieces make up his fourth cycle based on Joan Maragall’s poetry. The subject matter running through the cycle is the sea, as with the previous
cycle Views of the Sea.
Following the advice of Igor Markevitch, in the spring of 1949 Narcís Bonet moved to Paris to meet Nadia Boulanger and show her his work, including these compositions, and ask if she would give him lessons.
The cycle was performed in public for the first time at the Palau de la Música Catalana on 24 April 1949 with Aurèlia Basso de Balaguer singing and Narcís Bonet on the piano. In the prologue of the event’s programme, Nadia Boulanger wrote, “Narcís Bonet i Armengol is unquestionably a musician and a composer. He has what is most important for this: talent, style, balance, and feeling.” Igor Markevitch also added, “Narcís Bonet i Armengol is a composer, let there be no doubt about it.”

These pieces are the most Debussy-style works in the opus of Narcís Bonet. In this concert he also presented La cathédrale engloutie (The Sunken Cathedral), a prelude composed by Debussy in 1910.
