Inspired freely in jazz rhythms, Petites Subtileses [Little Subtleties] is a brief piece (of approximately 3 minutes of duration) that was created as a version of two themes proceeding from the work Sottigliezze in blue [Subtleties in blue], Op. 44, for trumpet and piano. Petites Subtileses shows an agile but energetic writing style, highlighted by the character of its musical speech, which flows in a spontaneous, fresh and free way, but with an expressive intensity and force that are on the increase (together with the tempo and dynamics) as it develops.
Petites Subtileses is structured in two parts. The first part is preceded by an introduction. In a style close to swing, this introduction presents a few free harmonies and an improvising nature. The first theme has a sensual and elegant character, whereas the second is more playful and dynamic. Although it doesn’t include great technical difficulties, the present work offers an added visual element, since it allows the pianist to show off his/her skills. It has to look like the pianist is improvising and, towards the end, almost dancing, ravished by the music’s rhythm. Rhythm, and especially syncope, has an outstanding role in this work.
