Although the word Sonata appears in the title, this composition does not accord to the classical sonata form, and this makes it different from Sonata nº 1. Its subtitle Introduction, Derivations and Finale is actually more revealing and can be seen as an accurate description of its contents.
The three initial bars in the Introduction present the series on which the whole piece is based. It lasts only one minute, which is in fact the whole span of the first movement.
This movement consists of a set of 18 minuscule variations (or, to be more precise, derivations) based on the series presented in the initial bars.
The third movement, Finale, mirrors the agile character of the Introduction, and it is patterned on a ternary ABA structure with a brilliant Coda added to it. Its primarily lively, even humorous spirit.
