(Songbook 5)Collection of eight pieces, some for high-voice choirs and others for mixed youth choirs, some with piano accompaniment and some unaccompanied; three are harmonisations of folk songs, and five are original compositions.
The works that feature a male voice are intended for singers whose voice has broken recently and whose newly acquired voice has not yet become defined as tenor, baritone or bass. Avoiding vocal difficulties in terms of range, articulation and volume has been attempted by keeping predominantly to the middle range.
As in previous volumes, the piano accompaniments are devised for accomplished musicians. They are sometimes complex and seek to make up for the simplicity of the melodies, endowing them with a contrasting and suggestive musical ambience.
These works were written as concert pieces, though in view of their nature, they are also well suited to musical-education purposes. They stem from teaching experience and from the need to provide students and young singers with a stimulating but accessible repertoire.
