He was born in Barcelona, and studied the piano with Alexandre Ribó and harmony and composition with Enric Morera.
Having devoted himself to conducting from early on, he was assistant conductor with the Orfeó Gracienc, where he worked with J. Balcells. He then moved to Santiago de Cuba, where he was called upon to found and direct the Music School in that city. When he returned to Barcelona in 1932, he became teacher of music at the Institute School of the Generalitat (the Catalan government) and also taught aesthetics at the Liceo Music School.
Starting in 1939, he devoted himself to private classes for a few years. He then became a teacher in the Isabel de Villena School, as well as director of the Schola Cantorum Universitaria, posts which he was to hold for over twenty years. He has left us a large number of harmonisations of folk songs from all over the world, songs which have since taken their place in the repertoire of all the choirs of Catalonia.
