Joan Izquierdo was born in Barcelona in 1966. He studied recorder at the Conservatory of Barcelona and later on at the Sweelinck Conservatory of Amsterdam. At present, he teaches recorder at the Escola Municipal de Música Josep Mª Ruera of Granollers as well as at the Conservatori Municipal de Música of Barcelona. His concern with the pedagogy and the spreading of recorder has lead him to write articles and textbooks on the teaching of this instrument at schools, as well as to an intensive activity in terms of master classes and conferences on the aforementioned subjects. As refers the field of interpretation, his activity is extensive and specialized. He is a member of several chamber music ensembles with which he approaches different styles and interests as the music of the 14th and 15th century (Trio Subtilior, Virdung), the polyphony of the 16th century (Sforzinda ' recorder sextet) and baroque music (Othello Ensemble). But it is in the field of contemporary music where his activity has had a major relevance: having premiered over fifty new pieces for recorder, his persistency has relaunched his instrument into the workshops of composers. In this field he is a member of the recorder quartet called Quartet de bec Frullato, has a duo with the percussionist Pilar Subirà and develops a tireless activity as a soloist with the frequent accompaniment of electronics.
